Across Africa, safe spaces that connect children and young people to trusted health services are becoming increasingly difficult to sustain. For many young people living with HIV, these spaces have offered confidential care, psychosocial support, and a sense of belonging in environments free from stigma and discrimination.

In this episode of #JournoConversations, we explore why these youth-friendly spaces matter and what is at stake as funding cuts threaten their future. From HIV testing and counselling to family planning services and peer support, these safe spaces have helped countless young people access the care they need while empowering them to make informed decisions about their health.

Host Chibuike Alagboso, Director of Media Programmes at Nigeria Health Watch, speaks with Christina War, an award-winning multimedia journalist from Uganda, about her reporting on the realities facing young people living with HIV. She shares the story of a young boy whose life was transformed through a youth-friendly corner, eventually becoming a peer educator, and discusses why sustained investment is essential to protect these lifelines for vulnerable communities.

The conversation underscores the importance of preserving safe, accessible, and youth-centred health services, and why governments and partners must work together to ensure that no young person is left without the support they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives.
